Once you have truly felt the power of God in your life, the deep connection to God that comes from a fully committed relationship with God through walking in obedience to the Spirit, you can’t actually go back to doing it any other way. I mean…you can…but what I’m about to share with you from personal experience will tell you why you shouldn’t and what will happen if you do.
I’m really hoping you’ll be able to take this article and not do what I did, even in a small way. You can learn the hard way like I did, or you can just take me at my word when I tell you, that you really don’t want to do this because learning lessons the hard way, really sucks.
I’m going to share an example from my life in the context of double-mindedness (meaning having your focus on more than one thing), but honestly this applies to everything that you’ll do with your relationship with God. Once you learn the way that God wants you to do or not do something, and you veer off course in that for even a moment, it becomes iniquity or sin, even if it’s seemingly “harmless” to everyone else.
Now, the above may give you the impression that God is out to tell you your business and force you to do it His was because “He says so.” And while it’s true that we should do everything that God tells us to do, that’s not the reason God actually applies the guidelines the way He does in our lives.
He does it because He has something super specific for us to do, that not only is a huge blessing that He wants to give us, but also will in the process help other people come to know more about who God is, how much He loves all of us, and How if we’re willing to walk with Him in relationship, He’s got a pretty sweet plan to help fix this mess we’ve created by doing everything our own way.
God’s Command for Single-Focus
Okay, so I’m going to quote a scripture I’ve quoted before because it’s important. But for those of you that haven’t received this from God yet yourself, don’t freak out, the process to get to where God was ready to call me to this was a 3.5 year intentional process to where He felt I was ready to actually dive into things fully. I’m sure God was ready for me to do it 3.5 years ago, but He’s gracious, and He doesn’t want to overwhelm us, so He shares new things with each of us to help draw us closer over time.
That was really good news for me and it is for you too. 3.5 years ago, when I opened the Bible, I was pretty sure I was about to be on the receiving end of God’s hammer dropping at any moment. My life didn’t look anything like what Jesus spoke about and when I read the 10 commandments, it was pretty clear that I wasn’t very good at consistently following any of those either. Now while I didn’t murder anyone, I was angry often and Jesus tells us that anger is the equivalent of murder in the heart so color me guilty there pretty frequently back in the day (Matthew 5:21-22).
In Matthew 6:22-23, Jesus is talking about the importance of our focus:
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Matthew 6:22-23 NKJV
I’ve discussed this in other articles and videos before but the word for “good” in the statement “if your eye is good” is haplous (G573 in the concordance) which means “single”. So in this context, Jesus is saying if your eye is “single-focused” your whole body will be full of light.
This was God’s way of nudging me further away from doing anything but focusing on improving my relationship with Him, staying in the Word, and focusing on the Holy Spirit’s instructions for my every move.
There are a few verses that are important with regard to this. Jesus talks about being born of the Spirit in John 3:5-8. He also references that everything He ever did, He only did so because He saw His Father (God) doing them (John 5:19) and many verses referencing that He only spoke the Words that God gave him to speak (John 12:49 is one example, but there are many). Finally, Paul talks about only those who walk by the Spirit of God being the sons (descendants) of God (Romans 8:14).
Essentially, this was God’s way of telling me it was time to “level up” in our relationship and start walking in a way that is consistent in the way, the truth, and the life that Jesus invites all of us to walk with Him.
For all of us, it’s a process, but for me, it was about taking an inventory of the things that I think about and spend time on that are getting in the way of walking according to only the Holy Spirit’s instructions. I’m not perfect at it yet, but just as we had to learn how to walk as infants and our parents encourage us along the way, God has been faithful to do the same with me here.
Cause & Effect of “Leveling Up” in Relationship with God
In the process of this, whenever God has been gracious enough to identify something new that is getting in the way of the calling, and I repent of it, it means that God has officially “leveled me up” in this area. I’m using video game terms because I think many people can relate to it.
Just like when you “level up” in a video game, you usually get either stronger in an area of your character’s life or sometimes you even gain new abilities that you didn’t previously have, the same has been true in my life and I believe is true for all life. These express themselves in either increased ability to exhibit the fruits of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5), and occasionally new gifts from the Holy Spirit (greater discernment of spirits, greater ability to heal by the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues, etc.)
Jesus was essentially “super-charged” with the Holy Spirit, because He was completely obedient, even to the point of death on the cross and was resurrected from the dead because of it. The Bible also tells us that He didn’t have sin, so when you talk about being a vessel fully prepared and primed to exhibit the fruits and also administer the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was the perfect example that we all should aspire to.
Jesus also says that we are meant to not only walk like He does, but if we do, that we will do the works that He has done and even greater works than He did.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
John 14:12 NKJV
Does this make us greater than Jesus? Absolutely not. The disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher (Luke 6:40).
With Greater Ability comes Greater Responsibility
Those are the positive benefits of “leveling up” with God an it’s honestly just an amazing blessing. God is good all the time.
With them also comes greater responsibility. Not only to use the things that God has given us to make a positive impact on the world as directed by the Holy Spirit, but also to stay consistently obedient at a level that we weren’t previously accustomed to in our lives. This is called “standing your ground.”
A lot of the reason we’re given greater ability in these new areas when we go deeper in our relationship with God is because God knows that the demonic forces working against us will be greater, especially right after you’ve leveled up. This is because the enemy hates advancement for the Kingdom of God and that’s what God has just done through you. You’ll need to stand your ground in this area and remain obedient and use the power of God to overcome the attacks of the enemy and stand firm.
This calls for you to remain obedient to what just caused you to level up. For me, this was as simple as staying completely focused on the things of God and not allowing anything else to get in the way of that focus. Even things like watching a football game, which I used to love to do but now, it just isn’t where my focus needs to be. This is the “double mindedness” that I referenced earlier in the article that took away from my singular focus.
Here are the consequences of not standing your ground:
- You may feel disconnected from God
- The same focus that got you to level up previously may not feel possible in the moment
- You may have other manifestations that are out of character (like irritability)
- If you don’t take care of it quickly, old temptations that have long since been overcome may start to creep back in
How to Overcome the Consequences & Take Back the Ground
As soon as you start to notice these symptoms, reconnect with God in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you need to repent from. Confess whatever the Holy Spirit shares with you as sin and ask God to cover the sin with the blood of Jesus. Then you must ask God to take back the ground that you gave up to Satan as a result of your sin. All of these are very important and must be done in order to get back in right standing with God. Then you must repent of it and not do it again.
Now you have to understand, that some things that you may not have previously thought were sin, may have become sin to you when you level up. This took place for me, because I knew the Holy Spirit was calling me to read something and I chose to watch my favorite NFL team play a few snaps of a football game instead.
Now the enemy is smart, so he may mask some of these symptoms until a later point in time, so that you can’t easily put two and two together on why the disconnect, or other symptoms start to settle in over the next few days, but they will come, as well as more opportunities to draw your focus away from God. So be alert, and do your best to catch them early so that you can go to God to remedy them quickly.
Special Warning to Married Couples & Parents
If you’ve entered the covenant of marriage with God, you and your spouse have become “one flesh” this means that you have been bound together in God’s eyes in the spiritual realm. Your disobedience, especially as the husband, has ramifications spiritually for your wife. You could open her to attacks from the enemy as well, she may start to feel some of the same symptoms in her spirit, which causes even more havoc. So catch it quickly. The same goes for your children if you are a parent. This isn’t a joke, take it seriously.
Ask God for Yourself
I’m sharing these things with you because I felt compelled to do so by the Holy Spirit. But you need to know that I’m not the source of Truth, only God is. While this was written based on the Truth that God has brought to me, God didn’t make you to have a relationship with me. He made you to have a relationship with Him. You don’t need me, I can help you along the way, but God loves you Himself and wants to share with you Himself.
If you’ve never had a conversation with God before or have not received the Holy Spirit, the gift of the Holy Spirit, which will lead you in relationship with God and into all truth (John 6:13) and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32). We have a prayer later in the article that you can use to start your relationship with God.
God made this gift of salvation available to all. He did this through His son Jesus Christ. Jesus lived and walked by the Holy Spirit, in full obedience to the Holy Spirit, even giving up His own life.
Jesus did this for two reasons:
- To be fully obedient to God, something that no man before Jesus had been able to accomplish. This made him an unblemished lamb in the eyes of the law of Moses.
- Because of His obedience, he fulfilled the curse of the law, which required bloodshed to atone for sin. Jesus gave himself, a sinless man’s blood, to break the curse of the law over all of men.
God accomplished two things in Jesus by this action:
1) Because the law was against mankind (flesh and blood), mankind had to overcome the curse of the law. God gave Jesus His Holy Spirit to guide Jesus into the fulfillment of the law and to break the curse. The curse was broken, once for all of mankind.
2) Whoever believes in what God accomplished through Jesus, and accepts Jesus as their Lord and savior, confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart that He is so, they shall receive the free gift of salvation, which is eternal life.
It’s Your Move Now
God already accomplished and fulfilled everything. It’s done. This gift is free, God has already given it to you, but you have to accept it because He will not force it on you.
If this is you, and you want to make this commitment today, below is a prayer that you can pray out loud. Do so in private, just you and God.
God in Heaven, I’m sorry. I love you. I am confessing to you that I am done living my life my own way, I have sinned against you in this way, and I ask for your forgiveness and I repent.
I ask for your help to identify the places in my life, where I am out of alignment with your Word. Please help me see these and help me to repent of them and align my life with the Truth of your Word.
I thank you for your son Jesus, whom you sent to fulfill the law’s requirement, so that in my flesh, I would not have to. Thank you that through belief in what You accomplished through Jesus, I have been given a gift I do not rightly deserve.
I believe that Jesus is Lord, that he has come in the flesh, and that He has fulfilled the law’s requirement for my salvation. I am prepared to accept this Truth and live my life according to this Truth.
I ask that you would cover my sins with the blood of Jesus, and that you would cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Jesus, thank you for doing what I was unable to do myself, and for giving your life in exchange for mine.
Father, I want to know the truth. I ask that you would please make your home with me and send your Holy Spirit to live inside of me, so that I may be led to walk like your son Jesus and made perfect through your process of sanctification.
Whatever you will Father, I surrender my life fully, to completing the purpose that you have for my life, to bring your name glory and honor and that more would be saved.
Thank you Father. I may not know where to go from here, but I trust that you will lead me through Your Holy Word and by Your Holy Spirit.
Thank you, I love you, in the name of Jesus I pray and ask of you these things. Amen.
