The season we are entering is the season where the Bible must be on our hearts if we are going to be successful in carrying out God’s promise.
In this verse, God shared with Joshua the way to be successful in carrying out the command to take the promised land. This is the very season that we are in today. NO MORE WILDERNESS, the time has come for those who would enter it, to enter and take the promised land for the Kingdom.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:8-9 NKJV
The Books that God is referring to here are the books of the traditional Torah (which is translated law). These are the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy.
Now, at the time Joshua was entering the promised land, these were the only books available to memorize. Joshua was the first book of the Nevi’im or “the prophets”. However, let us remember that while God would bring more through His people, including the prophets (The Nevi’im) and the writings (The Ketuvim) as well as for us Christians the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament, he saw that it was fit for Joshua to be delivered from the Wilderness and Into the Promised Land with only the first 5 books of our Bible.
The Torah, gives us many stories of God’s deliverance of His covenant people, his acts of mercy and grace despite the disobedience to His covenant, and ultimately everything leading right up into the entrance of the Promised Land.
God would use the additional writings of Joshua to tell us about how God delivered the promised land to Israel (which we are a part of by faith in the new Covenant through Jesus Christ). It’s important that we see these texts for what they are: stories of God’s love for his covenant people, displays of his power and light coming through the wisdom of following His commands, as well as his ultimate grace and mercy to the covenant relationship of His people, despite their disobedience.
Now, it is important to note, that God always reserves for Himself a remnant of people, in each movement, whom he allows the covenant to continue with, these are always the ones chosen by God to be the ones who have decided in their hearts to follow God with all their heart.
Let’s be those people. Let’s focus our whole heart on God’s word, recite it day and night, that we may have success and allow the Power of God’s Word and His faithfulness to His promises to deliver us from this wilderness and into the promised land which was spoken of by Jesus.
